A History of the Garden of Eden Ranch

The Garden of Eden Ranch was begun in 1957 by my grandparents Robert and Abrelia Hinckley. It stemmed from a desire to have "a pony" for their grandchildren. Their research led them to become interested in Welsh Ponies, because the Welsh were known to have kind dispositions.

My grandfather visited Welsh Pony Farms on his many trips to the East Coast. He then purchased five Section A ponies from Farnley Farms in Virginia. They arrived here, in Ogden, Utah, by train, much to the delight of all the grandchildren. When purchasing ponies, he always looked first for a good disposition, followed by good confirmation and Welsh type. He felt all ponies should be suitable for a child to handle. We still breed our ponies to maintain this ideal. We strive to offer an attractive, typey pony with a disposition suitable for a child, all at a reasonable price.

From the time they are born, our ponies are handled with kindness and taught good manners. They lead a healthy lifestyle by continually having regular vaccinations, foot trims and worming done. They are raised exclusively on our ranch with a diet of grass hay. Our ponies are all started in training with a good foundation of ground work. When beginning their training under saddle, they are taught by both adults and children. They are then brought along slowly to ensure that they will learn and remember the basics of their training.
